An autopsy for Liam Payne‘s untimely death on Wednesday, October 16, has been released.

Police were called to the scene after Liam fell three stories from his hotel balcony at the CasaSur Palermo Hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

According to a hotel worker’s 911 call, the artist was intoxicated and seemed to be “under the influence of alcohol and drugs,” insisting for help “immediately.”

The call was made at 5:01 p.m. local time, shortly before Liam’s death around 10 minutes later.

In a report obtained by TODAY, the Argentina National Prosecutor’s Office stated in a press release that Liam died from “polytrauma and internal and external bleeding,” also noting that “a series of substances were seized from the musician’s room, which would prove a previous situation of alcohol and drugs consumption.”

The prosecutor’s office called Liam’s death “doubtful/undetermined,” which indicates that his death is currently inconclusive on whether he fell or jumped. However, it also pointed out the evidence proves “that the musician was alone when the fall occurred, and that he was going through some kind of breakdown as a result of substance abuse.”

Additionally, the autopsy report revealed that the English singer died after sustaining “multiple traumatic injuries” and “internal and external bleeding” as a result of his fatal fall.

Officials discovered around 25 injuries, including ones to Liam’s skull, which “contributed to the mechanism of death,” the press release noted.

After forensic experts analyzed the singer’s hands, they did not find any defensive injuries, which led them to believe that “all the injuries on the body were vital and produced at the same time, and that no injuries were observed that could suggest the intervention of third parties.”

The position of Liam’s body had also suggested that he “did not adopt a reflexive posture to protect himself and that he could have fallen in a state of semi or total unconsciousness.”

Additional studies to determine whether there was alcohol or drugs in Liam’s system at the time of his death have been requested, according to the prosecutor’s office.

The 31-year-old singer had been in Argentina since early this month, when he attended the Oct. 2 concert of his former One Direction bandmate, Niall Horan, at the Movistar Arena in Buenos Aires with his girlfriend Kate Cassidy.

The couple was only planning to visit for five days, but ended up staying for two weeks, according to a TikTok video Kate posted on Oct. 14, 2024.

“I was so ready to leave,” she shared in the video. “Honestly, love South America but I hate staying in one place for too long. And we were supposed to be there for, like, five days, turned into two weeks. I was just like, ‘I need to go home.’”
