Veteran actor Jaya Bachchan is popular for her unfiltered conversations and her habit of speaking her mind. In an old interview, she admitted to being a strict parent to her son Abhishek Bachchan and daughter Shweta Bachchan, but not being strict with her daughter-in-law, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.

During her appearance on the chat show of fashion designers Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla, Jaya was told that rumours have it that she is a strict parent. The actor agreed and said, “Very strict.” When Abu Jani prodded her further and asked, “Are you the same as a mother-in-law?” Jaya responded, “Strict? She’s not my daughter. She’s my daughter-in-law. Why should I be strict with her? I’m sure her mother has done that for her.”

Abhishek Bachchan married Aishwarya Rai on April 20, 2007. The two are parents to daughter Aaradhya. Though Jaya calls herself a ‘strict parent,’ Abhishek disagrees, as in a 2023 interview with Zoom, he said, “Contrary to public opinion, my mother is not strict.”

During the same interview, Jaya also shared how she feels there is a difference between a daughter and a daughter-in-law. She said, “There is a difference between a daughter and a daughter-in-law, you know. I mean, I don’t know why, but you don’t feel you need to respect your parents. With your in-laws, you can’t do that.” The interview, which is now available on YouTube, was originally aired on NDTV Good Times.

Further, Jaya also mentioned her evolved perspective, saying, “And later on, things change – because today, I feel more a Bachchan than a Bhaduri.” Jaya received the surname Bachchan after marrying Bollywood star Amitabh Bachchan in 1973.

On the film front, Jaya Bachchan was last seen as a matriarch in Karan Johar’s hit film Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. It also starred Alia Bhatt, Ranveer Singh, and Dharmendra.
