Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s flamboyant opener Virat Kohli has been fined 50 percent of his match fees from the game against the Kolkata Knight Riders on Sunday.

“Kohli committed a Level 1 offence under Article 2.8 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct. He admitted to the offence and accepted the Match Referee’s sanction. For Level 1 breaches of the Code of Conduct, the Match Referee’s decision is final and binding,” a statement from IPL on Monday read.

A Level 1 offence under Article 2.8 of the IPL Code of Conduct pertains to “showing dissent at an umpire’s decision”.

Kohli had been involved in a heated argument with the on-field umpire on Sunday at Eden Gardens after he was deemed out off what he made as a possible waist high no ball.

In the third over of RCB’s chase, Harshit Rana delivered a full toss that was dipping at Kohli and deceived him in flight. Until then, Kohli had been batting superbly, but he didn’t read this, and only managed to guide the ball back to Rana in his follow-through.

He immediately signalled for a review, but these decisions don’t come under DRS. The umpires were going to review it anyway.
