After taking the world’s box office by storm, Prabhas and Deepika Padukone’s sci-fi thriller Kalki 2898 AD is set to release in Japan. On Monday (Nov 11), the makers announced that the movie will be released on January 3, 2025, on the festive occasion of Shogatsu, the Japanese New Year.

The pan-India stars some of the biggest actors in the Indian film industry such as Amitabh Bachchan, Prabhas, Kamal Haasan and Deepika among others. The film will be distributed by Twin in Japan.

Sharing the news, the makers wrote, ”#Kalki2898AD is all set to amaze audiences in Japan, hitting screens
on 𝐉𝐚𝐧𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝟑𝐫𝐝.”

Written and directed by Nag Ashwin, the sci-fi thriller is loosely based on the Indian mythology Mahabharat. The movie touted as one of the most expensive films made in India mixes Hindu mythology with sci-fi and VFX.

Kalki 2898 AD transforms the audience from Kurukshetra in Mahabharata’s time to 6000 years into the future when everything has turned barren and the only city left in this world is Kasi, which has been ruled by tyrant Yaskin (Kamal Haasan) who is living in a triangle block called the Complex.

This movie revolves around a group of people who are after Sumati (Deepika Padukone), a pregnant woman, who has been saved by Ashwathama (Amitabh Bachchan)

The movie was a huge box office hit, earning over Rs 1200 crore (12 billion) worldwide.

WION’s Review of Kalki 2898 AD

Written by Nag Ashwin, the film has taken huge references from DuneStar WarsMad Max: Fury RoadBlade Runner and even Marvel movies.

It’s a slow first half and an unnecessary subplot involving Disha Patani and Prabhas’s forced romance and gallivanting around the complex.

Kalki 2898 AD takes its time to establish the plot. The action mostly begins in the second half, when the pace picks up. However, by then the mind-numbing, long action sequences take precedence and the plot stops making sense.

At one point on the screen, we see two giant Amitabh Bachchans fighting each other.

Then there is a flying Prabhas with his aid, a robotic- AI-driven car/confidante who also turns into a giant robot, sports car, and spaceship at Prabhas’ will. Read the review here.
