Even as Virat Kohli notched up yet another ODI century, and equalled Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 49 ODI hundreds, he was getting trolled by a section of fans for his “selfish” and “slow” knock.

Virat Kohli got to his 49th ODI hundred on Sunday, on his 35th birthday, in India’s World Cup 2023 group-stage fixture against South Africa at the  Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

It is to note that Tendulkar raised his 49th ODI hundred in his 451st ODI innings, and Kohli reached there in just his 277th ODI innings.

This is the second century for the 35-year-old India superstar in the ongoing World Cup 2023 along with his 4 half-centuries in 8 innings. Kohli is now the second-highest run-scorer in the tournament with 582 runs at a huge average of 108; he’s remained not out thrice.

India put an above-par total of 326/8 against South Africa on a pitch that was described as “tricky to bat on” by Virat Kohli, who shared a partnership of 134 (158) with Shreyas Iyer, who scored 77 runs in 87 balls. Rohit Sharma had started attacking right from the start of the innings, whacking 40 runs in 24 balls.

At the 10-over mark, India were 91/1. However, after that, Shubman Gill got out and the pitch started playing tricks, making life difficult for Kohli and Iyer. The two batters battled the challenged out and put on a big partnership.

With Virat Kohli holding one end, Suryakumar Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja played useful, quickfire cameos. Suryakumar scored 22 runs in 14 balls and Jadeja scored 29 runs in 15 balls. Kohli remained not out on 101* off 121 balls.

Fans of MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma attacked Virat Kohli on Twitter for his “selfish” innings:

On his knock, Kohli said: It was a wicket that was tricky to bat on, we got a great start from Rohit and Shubman, my job was to keep it going on. The ball started gripping and turning after the 10th over, it slowed down and then my role was to bat deep with the others playing around me. That was what was communicated to me by the team management, Shreyas played well and we got a few more runs towards the end.
