The desks, neon lights, and conference rooms are named after famous people. Instead of traditional courses, the school uses projects and team-based learning to teach software development skills, following the chairwoman’s motto of “Learning through play, learning through play.

Since its founding in 2015, Holberton has taught students to code for free, then charged them 17 percent of their salaries for three and a half years after graduation. All of its graduates have found jobs easily. Chopra’s investment was part of an $8.2 million funding round for Holberton, and she joins the advisory board.

Getting down to business, in addition to coding education company Holberton School, Chopra also announced a second investment in Bumble, a dating and social media app founded by Whitney Wolfe Herd, one of the most prominent startup founders in the tech industry. Her next plan is to launch Bumble in India. Priyanka Chopra’s foray into Silicon Valley is somewhat reassuring, as she was introduced to tech investing in 2010 by her manager, Anjula Acharia, a savvy founder and investor, and a seasoned businesswoman. Acharia was the first investor in ClassPass, a fitness startup, and has since invested   Bulletproof Coffee, Health-Ade Kombucha, and The Muse.

In Silicon Valley, it’s rare for South Asian and Indian women like Priyanka Chopra to tech entrepreneurship So, with their Holberton investment portfolio, Chopra and Acharia are working to help change the tech industry’s gender gap. After being catapulted by music artist Ne-Yo, who invested in Holberton and began promoting the school to his fans, the school’s product apps have continued to grow. Now that two-thirds of Holberton’s students are people of color and 30 percent are women, Chopra is also considering a plan to promote the school’s activities to fans.

She has a column in the Hindustan Times  the “Priyanka Chopra Column,” and has written several controversial articles about  and safety of Indian women. In addition, as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, Chopra has also worked to advocate for the rights and well-being of children, focusing primarily on developing countries.

After being the face of many brands, including Pepsi, Nokia, Garnier and Nestlé, and stepping from Bollywood to Silicon Valley, Chopra revealed that she received her greatest inspiration from actor Ashton Kutcher, who was Demi Moore’s young lover. Sticking to Kutcher’s motto: “If you want a job, you have to do it. It takes time and there is a lot of potential for mistakes,” Chopra has been open to listening, learning from him and fully committing to that adventure.
